Australian Garnet’s 30/60 Mesh the Premium Abrasive of choice for Qatar Energy’s New Gasoline and Jet Storage Facility

Project Overview

Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC), located 40 km south of Doha in Qatar, serves as the foundation for Qatar’s gas processing, refining, petrochemical and metals industries. In 2023, Qatar Energy, with Rotary Engineering as the EPC contractor, commenced a strategic project to expand the country’s fuel storage and distribution infrastructure.

The project involved the engineering, procurement and construction of gasoline and jet storage facilities in MIC, Al Wakrah Municipality, Qatar. The key requirements for this critical infrastructure project included:

  • Two jet A-1 fuel storage tanks, each with a capacity of 36,000m³
  • Two firewater storage tanks, each with a capacity of 22,500m³
  • Five gasoline storage tanks, each with a capacity of 32,000m³

Premium Australian Garnet: The Abrasive Solution

A key consideration during the construction of these critical assets was ensuring their longevity whilst maximising availability throughout their operating life by minimising ongoing maintenance requirements. After an extensive qualification process, Koyenco Trading W.L.L was selected to supply Australian Garnet’s 30/60 Mesh premium abrasive for the abrasive blasting of all nine storage tanks.

Why Australian Garnet Was Selected

Australian Garnet was chosen because the project required a quality blasting abrasive that would:

  • Ensure substrates were free from contaminants, embedments and chlorides
  • Produce an optimal anchor profile to deliver superior coating adhesion
  • Create a superior surface finish that maximises coating longevity
  • Minimise future asset maintenance requirements

These characteristics are essential for critical petrochemical infrastructure projects where performance and safety cannot be compromised.

Project Outcomes

Koyenco Trading W.L.L supplied a total of 1,200 metric tonnes of Australian Garnet 30/60 Mesh for the new Gasoline and Jet Storage Facility in MIC. The success of this project has resulted in Australian Garnet’s premium abrasives becoming the abrasive of choice for multiple other Qatar Energy projects.

About Australian Garnet

Australian Garnet provides premium quality abrasives sourced from the pristine beaches of Western Australia. The 30/60 Mesh grade used in the Qatar Energy project exemplifies the key advantages of Australian garnet abrasives:

  • Single-Source Quality: Sourced from one pure mine site, ensuring consistent performance
  • Superior Physical Properties: Harder, denser (by up to 60%), and less friable than alternatives
  • Environmental Benefits: Non-hazardous natural mineral with recycling potential
  • Advanced Processing: State-of-the-art wet and dry processing ensures lower turbidity and dust
  • Efficient Production: Mine-to-bag in just 12 hours for maximum freshness and quality

These attributes make Australian Garnet particularly well-suited for critical infrastructure projects where performance, safety, and long-term asset protection are paramount considerations.
